How to Care for a Broom Plant

The broom plant, or Cytisus, can be a lovely landscaping plant or an invasive wild weed, depending on its type and location. The ornamental garden broom plant is a sturdy evergreen shrub with a semi-upright habit and long whip-like branches covered in small leaves. The pea-like flowers bloom from late spring through mid-summer in shades of red and yellow, depending on the variety. Resistant to pests and tolerant of weather changes, the broom plant is ideal for a low-maintenance garden. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Water broom plants every other week during periods when there is no rain. Allow an open garden hose to run at the base of the plant for two to three minutes to ensure water soaks through to the roots.

    • 2

Dig a trench to direct water away from the broom plant during times of excessive rain. Waterlogged soil may cause the foliage to yellow.

    • 3

Pull weeds from around the base of the broom plant, keeping the soil free from invasive plants. Spread a two-inch thick layer of mulch under the plant each spring to keep weeds in check.

    • 4

Rake away fallen seed pods, leaves and debris from under the Cytisus plant, or broom, in late autumn. Spread a two to three inch layer of mulch at least one foot in all directions from the plant base to protect from frost heaving during the winter.

    • 5

Prune damaged or brown branches with garden loppers. Cut the entire branch off at its attachment to the shrub's trunk.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most ornamental shrub broom plants available in nurseries and garden centers are a hybrid cross and unlikely to spread like the weedy variety, scotch broom.
