When you believe in a cause or want to achieve a particular goal, one way to do so is to utilize a petition. A petition is a document in which individuals who support your position demonstrate their support by providing their signature. The signature is the evidence that the person believes the statement contained in the petition. Generally, the more signatures a petition contains, the greater weight a petition will receive by the recipient.

How to Get People to Sign Your Petition

  1. Step 1

Develop a clear message. Use simple language that is easy to understand. Draft a colorful and direct petition that provides an easy and specific place where an individual can write his or her name.

  2. Step 2

Get the word out by advertising your petition. Visit your local public library, post office, municipal buildings and supermarkets and ask the managers if you can post your petition for signature. Check to see if you can set up an informational table or stand in front of the location and speak to patrons as they visit the location.

  3. Step 3

Check to see whether your jurisdiction permits door-to-door solicitation, so you can personally visit your neighbors to ask them to sign your petition. Try to have neighbors, friends and/or family members take a copy of your petition and have their friends sign the document.

  4. Step 4

Research Internet sites to advance your petition. For instance, http://www.petitionspot.com allows an individual to post his or her petition online and send it out over the Internet for electronic signatures.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check your local jurisdiction's laws before visiting public or private property and either soliciting signatures or posting any documents.
