Raisins are a sweet, natural treat that can help each member of the family meet their daily nutrition and fiber needs. Making raisin drying racks can be accomplished using common objects from around the household. Window screens make excellent drying racks that allow circulation from all sides. Drying raisins with the proper racks will ensure a consistent and healthful product.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Window screen
  • Water hose
  • Abrasive sponge
  • Dish soap
  • Kitchen towel
  • Paper towels
  • Cheese cloth

    Instructions

  1. Step 1

Prop the window screen vertically against a wall. Spray the screen with water using a water hose. Moisten an abrasive sponge with water and apply a quarter-sized dollop of liquid dish soap. Scrub the screen on both sides using small circular motions.

  2. Step 2

Rinse the window screen clean with water. Repeat the scrubbing to ensure the removal of all debris. Rinse both sides of the screen until no visible signs of soap remain.

  3. Step 3

Wipe the screen dry with a kitchen towel to remove all moisture. Allow the screen to air-dry for an hour to ensure that it will not transfer water onto the raisins.

  4. Step 4

Lay the screen flat and line the rack with one layer of paper towels. Fill the rack with clean grapes and top with a single layer of cheese cloth. Follow personal recipe for drying grapes into raisins.

  5. Step 5

Place the raisin drying racks in the sun positioned off of the ground during the drying process. Drying times will vary depending on regional temperatures and moisture content of the grapes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Drying times will range between a few short days to as long as two weeks.
  • Ensure that the raisins are kept out of reach of flies and unwanted insects during the drying process.
