Instructions

    • 1

Wash and condition hair. In addition to washing and conditioning, most black hair benefits from a leave-in conditioner. This helps to keep hair healthy and moisturized; it also helps to protect it against heat styling. Be sure to only slightly towel dry hair as it needs to be fairly wet in order to get a good wrap in place.

    • 2

Apply wrapping lotion. Wrapping lotion will not only add additional vitamins and minerals to the hair, but the lotion helps to hold hair in place during and after the wrapping. Depending on how long and thick your hair is, use a generous amount, saturating the hair with lotion.

    • 3

Part hair into four sections. Use a rat tail comb to do so, parting the hair vertically down the middle of your head, from forehead to neck. Then, part it again horizontally, from ear to ear. These parts will result in four sections of hair. Comb each section out well.

    • 4

Comb the hair in a clockwise direction. Use the wide tooth comb to do this and start from one of the sections on the bottom and in the back. Keep hair as smooth as possible while combing. The right wrapping lotion will help keep hair smooth; however, as you comb, it is important to comb out lumps of hair.

Continue to comb hair until it is wrapped completely around your head. The end result will look like a smaller version of the beehive hairstyle. Use the bristle brush to rein in any loose strands.

    • 6

Insert hair clips to hold hair in place. Place between four and six clips strategically around the wrap, pushing them into the hive slightly from the edges.

    • 7

Allow hair to dry. You can either let hair air dry, which usually takes about 12 hours; if you choose to let it air dry, wrap it in a silk scarf to keep it in place. You can also sit under a hair dryer for about an hour. The time it will take for hair to dry depends on the length and thickness of it.
