How to Mow St. Augustine Grass
St. Augustine grass is native to the Gulf of Mexico, the West Indies and West Africa and is a popular turf choice in the southern states from Southern California to Texas to the Gulf Coast. St. Augustine grass does not fare well in cold temperatures, so it can only grow in areas with mild climates. Maintaining St. Augustine grass is fairly easy in the warmer regions, but how often and at what length you mow your grass may vary depending on your location and the time of year. 1
Mow your St. Augustine grass every two weeks in early spring, keeping it at a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches. When the days are hot but the nights are cool, St. Augustine will get green and lush, but may not grow quickly.
-
2
Mow your grass every five days in the late spring and summer if you want to keep your grass from 1 to 2 inches in height. (During the summer, you can be more flexible with the height of your grass.)
-
-
3
Mow your grass every seven to 10 days if you want your grass to maintain a 2- to 2 1/2-inch height in late spring and early summer.
-
4
Mow your grass every 10 to 14 days if you want to keep your St. Augustine grass from 2 1/2 to 3 inches.
-
5
Keep your grass at 3 inches in height if it is in moderate to dense shade, and mow it about every 10 days.
-
6
Mow your grass as little as twice a month in the fall, as decreased temperature and fewer daylight hours cause the grass to grow much more slowly. But the grass will remain lush and green if allowed to maintain its 2 1/2-inch height.
-
7
Let your grass grow to about 3 1/2 inches in the late fall in preparation for the cold winter months, when your lawn will need the wider leaves to collect what little sunlight it can get.

Tips & Warnings
Keeping your lawn maintained and properly trimmed promotes healthy growth. If your lawn gets higher than 3 or 3 1/2 inches, it will not only look messy, but it also will be more prone to insect and disease problems.
Avoid cutting wet grass; it cuts unevenly and the clippings will stick to the grass, blocking out sunlight.
