How to Trap & Kill a Skunk

Trapping and killing a skunk is a necessity, especially if they are living under the house or porch, causing a ruckus, and releasing their foul odor. Trapping and killing a skunk isn't a difficult process--it just takes a bit of time and preparation. There are several kinds of traps that can be used, but the best trap to use is one that has specifically been designed for skunks and their spray. These traps are not air tight, but they will help prevent the horrid smell. Bait such as fresh fish, canned fish or fish-flavored cat food will serve well. Any gun can be used, as long as it is safe to use. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 2

Put the trap with the captured skunk in the back of the truck carefully, without bumping or jarring the trap too much.

    • 3

Drive to an area that is safe for gun use.

    • 4

Set up the playpen or enclosure.

    • 5

Place the trap inside of the enclosure.

    • 6

Open the trap and when the skunk comes out, shoot in the head or heart. Dispose of remnants in accordance with state law.

Tips & Warnings

  • Killing a skunk will allow for the release of the odor if the skunk has not used any spray in the past ten days. Skunks can be vicious and would rather retreat from danger than take a stand. Skunks will tend to use their spray as a last resort defense system.

Before setting the trap, you can enclose all but the open end in a plastic garbage bag big enough to completely enclose the trap. Bunch the bag opening around the exposed trap door so it can easily be extended and completely enclose the trap after a skunk is caught. After the skunk is caught and completely enclosed in the bag, it can be easily transported to be released, drowned as per Maxwell, or "gassed" by sticking the tailpipe of an idling car into the bag opening.

The only entirely effective way to eliminate skunks is to trap and kill them. I've live trapped several, and in my experience, every one sprayed when shot (headshots all). This year I purchased a "spray proof skunk trap", which has been very effective. I bait it with bread smeared with peanut butter which I stick to the traps trigger. I've caught six in the last couple of weeks using this method. Once caught, quietly approach the trap and gently lift it off the ground. Then drop it in a pre-positioned 35-40 gallon trashcan filled with water. The weight of the trap and its contents will sink it to the bottom. Drowning is the only method I've found that prevents a discharge of scent.
