How to Manage Risk at a Major Outdoor Event

Major outdoor events such as concerts, fairs and festivals have a certain amount of risk associated with them. In order to manage risk at a major outdoor event, there is an event risk management process you and the planning committee can go through to identify and deal with potential risks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of potential risks. Jot down all of the possible risks, injuries or losses that may occur at the event. For example, if serving food will be part of the event, food poisoning is a possible risk. If there are amusement park rides, then injuries or even deaths resulting from people falling from the rides are potential risks.

    • 2

List ways to deal with each risk. Ideally, you want to determine ways that you can avoid the risk, injury or loss from occurring in the first place. You will also need to list out the steps required to deal with a risk, injury, or loss, if or when it does occur. For example, requiring your food vendors to pass a food and health inspection may be one way to avoid food poisoning.

Obtain event insurance. There are insurance companies that provide major outdoor events with an event insurance and liability policy such as the Aon Insurance company (See References 1). Establishing an event insurance policy can help you manage risk at a major outdoor event by protecting in case of loss or injury.
