Instructions

    • 1

Examine the wooden frame around the glass on both sides of the door. This frame is made up of thin pieces of molding known as "beads." On one side of the door the beads will be installed with nails. On the other side, they are built into the door itself, so no nails are used. When removing and replacing glass, you'll only be working from the side of the door where the beads are nailed into place around the glass.

    • 2

Use a utility knife to cut away caulk or paint around the perimeter of the wood beads. This will make them easier to remove.

    • 3

Remove the beads from the door. Place the tip of a chisel between the glass and the beads and use it to force the beads away from the door. You can also use the claw end of a hammer to pry the beads away. Once the beads are removed, carefully take the glass out of the opening and set it aside for disposal.

    • 4

Purchase a new piece of glass that's 1/8 inch smaller than the opening in both height and width. Choose tempered glass for added safety. Have the material cut to size at your local home improvement or hardware store.

    • 5

Place the new glass into the opening and use clear silicone to caulk around all four edges. You may wish to have a partner help hold the glass in place as you secure it.

    • 6

Reinstall the new beads one at a time. Place each bead into the opening so that it is flush with the glass. Hammer small trim nails into the bead at a 45 degree angle. Ensure that the nails are hammered into the door itself, making sure to avoid the edges of the glass.

    • 7

Cover the nail heads with wood filler, then sand the beads smooth once they dry. Paint the beads as needed to match the rest of the door.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use caution when working with glass. Wear heavy gloves so you can handle the glass safely and avoid cuts.
