How to Rake Pond Weeds
A pond rake is designed to clear a pond or tank of unsightly weeds and undergrowth. It is necessary to keep a pond clear of debris and weeds, not only for aesthetics purposes, but also to protect any wildlife that may be present in the pond. Harmful weeds and algae can kill fish and stunt the growth of other plants. Raking a pond will add beauty and function to it. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Set up your pond rake according to the instructions. There are several different kinds of pond rakes, and each one is set up a little differently. The most basic pond rake looks like a heavy-duty garden rake. Attach the handle to the pond rake head and tie the rope to the end of the pond rake. Make sure to use a knot that will not come undone. Wear heavy-duty gloves and wading boots. Prepare to get wet!

2
Cast the rake as far as possible into the pond. This will grab the weeds that are under the surface of the water. For weeds on the surface of the water or for weeds that are closer to the edge of the pond, grab the handle of the rake and skim the surface of the pond with a motion similar to the motion used to clean a pool surface.

3
Pull the rake back slowly to grab as many weeds as possible. To get weeds that are deep under the surface, tie a large rock to the bottom of the rake so that it sinks when thrown into the water. Slowly drag the rake out of the water and towards you. This will gather more weeds than a fast pull.

4
Grab the rake and detangle all the weeds that are attached. For extremely tangled weeds, it may be necessary to cut them loose. Discard the weeds and place them in a trashcan or trash bag to throw away later.
-
5
Continue to rake the pond using these two methods until the pond is cleared. It will likely take several hours to clean a pond that has been neglected for several months or years. If the pond is not clean enough after one raking, come back another day and try again.
