How to Separate Cigars in a Humidor

Cigar humidors are used to store cigars so that a temperature may be maintained which allows the cigars to remain fresh and ready for smoking. Inside the humidor, it is necessary to separate cigars of different type from one another. This is necessary due to the different types of leaves used in different cigars. For example, a cigar featuring a stronger Habano 2000 leaf wrapper should be separated from a milder Connecticut shade leaf wrapper. Without separation, the nuances and flavors of cigars may be passed on to each other.

Things You'll Need:

  • Cedar dividers or trays
  1. Step 1

Determine the number of dividers needed for the humidor. Take into consideration the number of differing types of cigars and the configuration or arrangement inside the humidor.

  2. Step 2

Obtain additional dividers from the humidor manufacturer. It is possible to also make dividers from the cedar lining found inside cigar boxes. Cut the cedar, taking into account the height and length necessary to fit inside the humidor. Also leave a small amount of space so that a thin piece of foam may be placed on the end of the cedar divider. This will secure the divider without damaging the interior of the humidor.

  3. Step 3

Properly season the new divider prior to using. Wipe the divider with distilled water. Place the divider in an air-tight container for a few days and continue to periodically wipe the divider with more distilled water.

  4. Step 4

Place the seasoned divider in the humidor in such a manner as to properly separate cigars from one another.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the divider within the humidor as cigars are enjoyed and added.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dividers may also take the form of cedar trays. Making homemade dividers is more complicated and time-consuming and ordering may be more practical.
  • Make sure that only Spanish cedar is used as divider material.
  • Failure to properly season new dividers will result in the dividers absorbing the available moisture in the humidor and may potentially affect the overall humidity level of the humidor.
