How to Collect Sweet Corn Seeds

Sweet corn seeds should be collected as early as possible in the season when the corn becomes ripe. It is an easy process to collect the seeds if you are growing your own corn and want seed stock for next year. If you plan on using store-bought corn, however, you will want to take a few extra steps to successfully dry the seeds. The collected seeds, when properly stored, can remain dormant and usable for up to two years before perishing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. How to Collect Sweet Corn Seeds on the Stalk

    • 1

Find early, well-formed corn that is still on the stalk.

    • 2

Cover the corn with a paper bag and tie off the open end. This will keep out the bugs.

    • 3

Let the corn seeds remain on the stalk as long as you can to dry out.

    • 4

When the corn is completely dry, remove the cob from the stalk.

    • 5

Pull away the husk and carefully break off the seeds.

    • 6

Store them in a paper bag in a cool place until use.

How to Collect Sweet Corn Seeds from Store-Bought Corn

    • 7

Choose the freshest, most healthy looking cobs with the husk still attached. Do this early in the season and pick a cob that is not overly ripe.

    • 8

Pull back the husks and hang them upside down in a dry area with minimal bugs or rodents present. Let them dry thoroughly.

    • 9

Carefully break away the seeds that are now dry and store them in a paper bag, in a cool place until use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using store-bought sweet corn may yield less than expected results.

  • Do not cover the corn on the stalk with a plastic bag or you will suffocate it; it must be able to breathe.
