Sweet jams from both Eastern and Western cooking traditions are a delicious accompaniment to breads or cakes. Indian jams sometimes add ghee, resulting in a variety of tastes and textures. This recipe is a mixture of exotic and common fruits, as well as exotic sugars and ghee.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Banana
  • 1 Mango
  • 1 Guava
  • 1 Orange
  • 1 Apple
  • 5 Jackfruit
  • 1 cup grapes
  • 1 3/4 cups dates
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup jaggery
  • 1/2 cup candy sugar
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  1. Step 1

Chop the banana, mango, guava, jackfruit, grapes, apple and orange into small, dime-sized chunks. Mix them together in a large bowl.

  2. Step 2

Add the honey, jaggery, candy sugar and ghee to the bowl. Jaggery is a sweetener from the Indian subcontinent that is made from sugar cane or dates.

  3. Step 3

Mix well and place the mixture in a pan over medium heat until the mixture is fully combined. Do not let the mixture boil.

  4. Step 4

Remove the pan from the heat and let it sit for 10 minutes.

  5. Step 5

Serve the jam with bread or cake. The consistency will be runnier than traditional western preserves, similar to a chutney or a relish.
