How to Calculate Arudha

In Vedic astrology, Arudha (translated as "mountain") describes how we view the world around us, and how the world views us. According to the American College of Vedic Astrology, Vedic astrology allows a practitioner to assess an individual's past, present and future. Calculations of the 12 Arudha are an integral part of this examination. Two of the most common calculations are the Arudha of a person and the Arudha pada of a house.

  1. Arudha of a Person

    • 1

Zoran Radosavljevic, a Vedic astrologer, states that the first step is to count (in zodiacal direction) how far the Bhava lord has moved from its original place. For example, if your house of interest is Gemini and the lord is in Aquarius, there are nine zodiac signs between the two.

    • 2

Radosavljevic says to use the number you found in Step 1 (in our case, nine) and count the same number from the Bhava lord. Nine zodiac signs from Aquarius is Libra.

    • 3

If the Bhava lord is put in the same or seventh Bhava, ignore the calculation in Step 2 and place the Arudha in the 10th Bhava instead. If the count is four or 10 spaces away, count four spaces from the Bhava to obtain the Arudha.

    • 4

Repeat for each Arudha that you wish to measure.

    Arudha of a House

    • 5

Astrologer Juliana Swanson says to count the signs between the house of interest and the ruler of the house. Include the house itself when counting forward, in zodiacal direction.

    • 6

Take the number calculated in Step 1, and count that number of spaces forward from the ruler of the house. That number will land on the Arudha pada.

    • 7

Repeat for each Arudha that you wish to measure.
