stay safe as a tourist...ANYWHERE

There are so many ways that a vacation can go very wrong: transportation problems, illness or injury, bad weather, etc. Obviously, you can't control every variable, and if you could, you probably wouldn't have a very memorable trip. Follow these easy tips to minimize your risk of being attacked or robbed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A clear goal and preparation for prevention of attack
  1. Step 1

Travel light. Bring on your trip only what you absolutely need. Do not carry anything that you couldn't tote, at a dead run, for a half mile. Trying to manage cumbersome luggage, bags, and boxes makes you more vulnerable to attack.

  2. Step 2
    sexy prey!
    sexy prey!

Leave your valuables safely at home. Flaunting your wealth, especially in a tourist' destination increases your odds of being victimized. Leave your gold and expensive watch at home...NEVER in your hotel room. In fact, EXPECT anything left in your hotel room to be stolen!

  3. Step 3

You can slip on your Bruno Magli's or your Manolo Blahnik's if you are just about to go out to dinner at a VERY posh restaurant, but for the balance of your trip, wear something that you can run in. A predator sees a woman in 4" heels as wounded prey. You are better off going barefoot than walking down a dark street in shoes that you can't move in.

  4. Step 4

Carry a weapon. This is important, especially for women. Pepper spray is very effective. You hope that you never have to engage in hand-to-hand combat, but your chance of survival is much greater if you have a weapon and are not afraid to use it! This lovely little kitty keychain will puncture a jugular vein or take out an eye if used correctly. If you have to dig in your pocket or purse to find your weapon when you feel threatened, it may already be too late. Be ready for an attack!

  5. Step 5

Avoid dangerous places and situations, wherever possible. Listen to your gut. If you need to get in the elevator and it's occupied by a couple of thugs that make you feel uncomfortable, take the next car. The bet way to survive an attack is to avoid it. If you are attacked, try to get away from your attacker as quickly as you can. Maybe you can overpower the predator, but he or she can't hurt you if you're halfway down the street.

  6. Step 6

Another tip to NOT be percieved as prey: Look like a predator. Don't avoid eye-contact. Initiate it. If somebody intimidates you, look at him or her and think: "IF YOU WANNA BREATHE RIGHT, YOU BETTER STEP OFF!"
Predators usually seek easy prey...Somebody who won't put up a fight. Don't be surprised by an attack. Expect it. If somebody lays a hand on you, try to deliver a FATAL blow and GET out of there!

on 11/15/2009 You sound like you know a little too much about how a predator thinks. I think you will try to mug me.
