Carefully Examine Christmas Lights

Christmas lights create a cheerful and warm atmosphere during the Christmas season, but if not used properly, they can also create a fire. This article will explain how to safely use Christmas lights this holiday season.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before you start putting up Christmas lights, examine the lights and the cords carefully. Look for any frayed wires or bare spots. Make sure the bulbs do not have loose connections or broken sockets. Plug in the string of lights and replace missing or broken bulbs.

  2. Step 2

Never link more than three strands of Christmas lights together. This will causes an electrical overload on the wires. Feel the cords occasionally to make sure they are not warm to the touch. If you blow a fuse, immediately unplug the lights and replace the fuse.

  3. Step 3

Always unplug your Christmas lights before going to bed or leaving the house. Never unplug them by yanking the cord. This will also damage the wires and could also lead to an electrical shock.

  4. Step 4

For outdoor decorating, make sure the lights are specifically labeled for outdoor use. Avoid securing Christmas lights with staples or nails. Use hooks and clips that are designed for hanging strings of lights. Don't close doors and windows on extension cords. This can also damage the cord's wires. Also, try not to overload extension cords either.

  5. Step 5

Always keep your children and pets away from Christmas lights. Never cover the lights with cloth or paper.

  6. Step 6

Take down the Christmas lights when the holidays are over and store them in a dry place where they won't get damp.

Tips & Warnings
  • When buying Christmas lights, look for the holographic (UL) label. UL certifies indoor and outdoor lights. Indoor lights have a green UL mark and indoor/outdoor lights have a red UL mark.
