Step 1
Be sure that when you're setting up the web cam not to be sitting in front of a window or other bright light source. This will cause you to be back lit and make it difficult for the interviewer to see you on camera.
-
Step 2
Look at the camera when you answer questions. Traditional job interview training advises you to look your interviewer in the eye. In an interview using a web cam you have to remember that the interviewers "eye" is actually the web cam. However, it's advisable to look at the interviewer's image when they're speaking so you get the full benefit of interpreting their body language along with the spoken words.
-
Step 3
Practice good posture and framing by sitting straight up in the chair. You'll want to also be sure you're well framed in the camera. A good way to do this is turn your chair about 45 degrees to the camera and then turn your head toward it.
-
Step 4
Don't sit too close to the camera. Just because this is a video job interview doesn't mean that you don't have to follow basic interview techniques like respecting personal space. Sitting very close to the camera can be disconcerting to the interviewer. A good rule of thumb is that they should be able to see three shirt buttons of your shirt from their end.
-
Step 5
Dress appropriately. A video job interview is still a job interview and you should treat it as such. Your clothing should be the same as it would if you were interviewing in person.
-
Step 6
Avoid all distractions. Silence cell phones, sequester pets, don't let children or other visitors interrupt your interview. These can be very distracting when seen from the interviewer's side of the web cam.
