How to Brew Fresh Ginger Tea

Ginger is a common component of Asian dishes and is found in products such as ginger ale and holiday ginger bread. In some circles ginger is touted as a treatment for nausea and upset stomach and is recommended for treating morning sickness symptoms in pregnant women. Children younger than 2 years old should not consume ginger in a tea or medicinal form. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Large saucepan
  • 8 cups of water
  • 1 medium ginger root
  • 1 lemon
  • Honey or agave nectar

Instructions

    • 1

      Heat 8 cups of water to a boil in a large saucepan. Peel the outer skin off the ginger root with a paring knife or vegetable peeler while the water is heating.

      Slice 1/4 cup of ginger into very thin slices with a paring knife or chop it finely. Add the ginger to boiling water. Add 1/8 teaspoon of lemon zest to the water and ginger mixture. Steep the solution for 15-20 minutes.

      Pour the mixture through a sieve or similar filter to catch the ginger and lemon zest, filtering it out of the tea. Sweeten it with 1 tsp. of agave nectar or honey to taste.

      Serve the ginger tea chilled over ice for an iced tea drink, or drink it hot and enjoy the aromatic lemon from the zest.
