Step 1
First you need to make sure that it is really dandruff and not dermatitis which would show redness of the skin along with scaling on the scalp. You would need to see a dermatologist to obtain a prescription medication for dermatitis or psoriasis.
-
Step 2
If you have dandruff make sure to shampoo daily to get rid of excessive oils on your scalp. You can also try different shampoos to see which one will help control the flakes. If you are using a regular shampoo you might want to try a antidandruff shampoo. You should try and use several different shampoo's over several months. Your dandruff could return if it gets resistance to the same brand of shampoo. After a month or so of changing just start over with the first shampoo.
-
Step 3
You should lather your hair twice. The first washing will get rid loose flakes and oily build up.Try and leave the second washing on your hair and scalp for 5 minutes. This will give the antidandruff shampoo time to penetrate the hair and skin on the scalp. You should try and resist the temptation to scratch your head. This will just make the area red and more sensitive to the shampoo. If you have scratched your scalp you will need to try a mild shampoo like baby shampoo until the area has healed.
-
Step 4
If you have tried antidandruff shampoo and it is not working you can try a shampoo made from tar. The tar shampoo will decrease cell turn over and is very good at controlling dandruff. You will need to make sure you rinse after using a tar shampoo. Tar shampoo can be hard on your hair. You should use a hair conditioner or crème rinse to help soften the hair. You should take it easy using mousses, sprays and gels they tend to add more oil to your scalp and cause an oily build up. You should make sure to wash you hair after any activity that causes you to sweat. Sweat irritates the scalp and speeds up flaking and dandruff.
