Many people think that if they stumbled upon a crime in progress they would know what to do. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes in the moment we can freeze from our fear or become overwhelmed. Violent crime is terrifying therefore it is important to think about how you would respond before you are in a position of needing to make a report. Follow these steps to report a crime in progress.

  1. Step 1

    If you witness a crime in progress you need to immediately call 911. You can use your cell phone or go to a public phone but call 911 immediately.

  2. Step 2

    Make sure you get to a safe location while you are on the phone with 911. At this point you are the link between the emergency and the people that can help. It is important to stay safe while you inform the 911 dispatcher of the situation.

  3. Step 3

    Provide the location of the crime and explain what is occurring to the best of your ability. Try to describe the people involved in the crime and any types of weapons or vehicles they may have.

  4. Step 4

    If you have encountered a crime against a person it is important to detail for the dispatcher what type of injuries the victim may be experiencing. The dispatcher can send an ambulance and provide the EMT's with information so they are prepared when they arrive at the scene.

  5. Step 5

    Stay on the phone with the 911 dispatcher until the police officers arrive on the scene. Once they have arrived you can hang up the call and speak with them. Try to remain calm and collected so you can provide the officers with a good description of the events you saw occurring.
