How to Remove Urine From a Pillow Top Mattress

Almost every pet owner and parents have at some point cleaned urine stains from furniture, floors, and rugs. The bedroom is also not immune from this problem. If you have unsightly and offensive urine stains on your pillow top mattress, there are ways to correct this issue.

Things You'll Need

• Vinegar
• Rubbing alcohol
• Grain alcohol
• Liquid laundry detergent
• Steam cleaner
• Towels

Instructions

Vinegar

1. Pour a small to medium amount of vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or grain alcohol on the stain. This treatment is effective for killing germs and removing odors, not lifting the actual stain.

2. Allow the liquid to absorb into the area.

3. Use a towel to soak up any vinegar left behind.

Liquid Laundry Detergent

1. Use liquid laundry detergent to remove new stains. This is effective for removing the stain, not the odor.

2. Rub a mixture of the detergent and water directly into the stain.

3. Allow it to sit for several minutes. Lift up any excess liquid with a towel.

Steam Cleaner

1. Rent a steam cleaner for set-in stains. Companies that provide these rentals can be located online or in your Yellow Pages.

2. Turn your steam cleaner setting to low or medium.

3. Pre-treat the area with a blast of steam, using the nozzle, not the brush. To accomplish this, hold the nozzle 6 inches from the stained area.

4. Place a towel over the stain and work the triangular or circular brush attachment over the area, moving in two directions.

5. Work the area over the stain until the towel is very hot and moist. Do not allow it to become wet. Repeat these steps until the stain has been completely lifted. Discard the towel after use.

• When using a steam cleaner, begin at the areas that are the least stained and work your way to the most affected spot.

• Perform a test on an unaffected area to make sure the steam won't damage your mattress.
