How to Connect Desktop to DSL Modem
Digital Subscriber Loop Internet access is one of the most common types of broadband available to users. However, people that get the service typically have to use a self-installation kit that the Internet Service Provider sends to them via the mail. Being able to install the DSL kit on your own means that you don't have to pay someone else to do it for you.
Things You'll Need
- DSL Modem
- Ethernet Cable
- Regular Telephone cable
- Username and password given to you by your ISP
Instructions

1
Turn off the computer. Move the computer tower so you have easy access to the back of the computer.
-
2
Remove the connection to the computer's modem if there is one.
-
-
3
Attach the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port located in the back of the computer. The port looks like a wider head of a telephone cable. Attach the other end to the DSL modem's port.
-
4
Attach the telephone line to the DSL modem, then connect the line to the phone jack. You may elect to use the same line you used to connect your computer's dial-up modem to the phone jack.
-
5
Turn the DSL Modem on. Wait for all of the lights to turn on.
-
6
Turn your computer back on and open your favorite web browser. A website should appear prompting for a username and password.
-
7
Enter the username and password given to you by your ISP. You should then get a statement saying that you are connected to the Internet.

Tips & Warnings
Most installation kits come with all the cables you need to install the DSL Modem.
Be sure to install DSL filters on any phone or other device that connects to the phone line. Again, self-installation kits typically come with one or two filters. If you need more, you can purchase them at your local electronics store.
