How to Stop Hair Loss With PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal imbalance found in women that causes cysts to develop within the ovary. The syndrome can cause infertility and other health problems, such as weight gain, pelvic pain, diabetes and high blood pressure. PCOS can also cause cosmetic issues, including excess hair growth on the body, skin tags, acne and hair loss. Hair loss can be treated by addressing the underlying hormonal imbalance. (Ref. 1.)

Instructions

    • 1

Make an appointment with your gynecologist or obtain a referral for a reproductive endocrinologist. Find a doctor that you are comfortable with and who is familiar with PCOS.

    • 2

Work on a plan to manage diet and exercise with guidance from your physician. Maintaining a healthy weight will keep PCOS symptoms under control.

    • 3

Discuss options for medications with your doctor. If you are not actively trying to get pregnant, your doctor may suggest an oral contraceptive to regulate your hormones. He may also suggest an insulin-sensitizing drug such as metformin, as insulin resistance can play a part in PCOS.

Tips & Warnings

  • The best diet for women with PCOS includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and fewer processed food and sugar.
