How to Cut Back Hardy Hibiscus

Hardy hibiscus is a hybrid that has been adapted for cooler climates, whereas tropical hibiscus will have to spend the winter indoors in areas where the temperature approaches freezing. Cutting back hardy hibiscus for the winter will ensure a larger and healthier plant the following year.

Things You'll Need

• Pruning shears
• Mulch

Instructions

1. Wait until your area receives a hard frost in late fall before pruning hardy hibiscus.

2. Cut all the stems back to 4 or 5 inches from the ground. Cut each stem at a slight angle with the pruning shears.

3. Cover the cut stems with a 3-inch layer of mulch. The mulch will protect the stems from snow and wind.

Tips & Warnings

• Hardy hibiscus are slow to begin growing in the spring, but be patient. They will produce a thicker bush each year if properly pruned.
