Instructions

    • 1

Remove the patch of grass. Using a shovel or sharp, flat spade, remove the grass in the area you have designated for your flowerbed. Dig at least eight inches into the soil and be sure to remove the grass' root system. When removing the roots, retain as much topsoil as possible. Compost the removed grass and roots.

    • 2

Amend the soil. Lay a five-inch layer of compost over the soil. Turn it into the soil.

    • 3

Plant the flower varieties of your choice in the spring.

Keep up with grass and weed removal. Natural spreading and failure to remove all of the roots in a garden may result in the occasional weed or grass sprout. If you remove the plants and their roots as they pop up, they will not interfere with the growth of your garden.
