How to Get a Driving Record

Insurance companies and employers are the two largest segments of society that require a copy of your driving safety record. Although most who desire a copy of your driving record will simply have you sign a letter of permission for them to order a copy, many require the driver herself to order, and present, the driving record personally. Every U.S. state has an application form which must be filled out and sent to the particular state's Department of Motor Vehicles.

Access your state's DVM website "Forms" link and locate the form for ordering a copy of a driving record. Every state uses a different title for the form, but it may be titled in a manner such as "Application for Copy of Driving Record" or any similar title. When you have found the correct link, click it to open in your browser and print it out on your computer printer.

Fill in all of the blocks on the application form, which may include your name, current address, license number, date of birth and Social Security number, along with any other additional information your state requires. If your state has a fee requirement, it is generally listed on the form.

Place a stamp on the envelope and place it in the mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most states require seven to 10 business days to process your application, so please be patient with your state's DMV office; afford them at least this amount of time before attempting to contact them.
