How to Light a Pilot Light on a Furnace

The pilot light on a furnace is the small flame that is constantly burning. The gas valve on the furnace opens up when the temperature falls below the thermostat setting, which in turn allows gas to flow into burners. The gas is then ignited by the pilot. When the pilot light goes out, so does the heat in your home. Lighting the pilot light on a furnace can be done quickly and safely by taking proper measures. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the thermostat so that it does not try to turn on while you are lighting the pilot light.

    • 2

Shut the gas off at the main valve located at your utility box. Allow the gas fumes to dissipate by waiting about five minutes before proceeding.

    • 3

Turn the furnace's gas valve to the "Pilot" position.

    • 4

Hold a long fireplace match or a long-stem lighter to the tip of the pilot orifice while simultaneously pressing the red pilot button. This red button is generally located near the gas supply knob.

    • 5

Continue holding the pilot button for about one minute once the pilot light ignites. This will ensure that the thermocouple is heated up and the pilot light stays lit.

    • 6

Release the red button to see if the pilot stays lit. If it does not, wait about 10 minutes and repeat the lighting process.

    • 7

Turn the main gas valve back on once the pilot light remains lit. If it will not stay lit after a few attempts, call a service technician. The pilot may need to be adjusted or the thermocouple replaced.
