How to Toast Hazelnuts

Instructions

  1. In the Oven

    • 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the baking sheet on a flat surface.

    • 2

Spread the hazelnuts on the baking sheet evenly in one layer.

    • 3

Put the pan in the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally so the hazelnuts don't burn. The nuts are ready when they are golden in color and fragrant.

    • 4

Remove the pan from the oven and let the nuts cool slightly.

    • 5

While the nuts are still warm, pour them onto a clean, dry dish towel. Gather the ends of the towel around the nuts and rub the nuts together until most of the skins come off.

    On the Stovetop

    • 6

Heat the skillet over medium-low heat.

    • 7

Cook the nuts in the skillet for 3 to 4 minutes. Stir the nuts with a spoon or shake the pan occasionally to prevent burning.

    • 8

Remove the skillet from the heat when the nuts are fragrant and browned.

    • 9

While the nuts are still warm, pour them onto a clean, dry dish towel. Gather the ends of the towel around the nuts and rub the nuts together until most of the skins come off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let nuts cool completely before using them in a recipe.

  • You can add 1/8 tsp. salt to the nuts for taste if you aren't going to use them in a sweet recipe.
