Tackling the question of birth control as a teenager is a touchy subject. There are many methods of birth control available. Some methods, such as condoms, do not require a prescription; hormonal methods such as the pill require a visit to a doctor or clinic. Obtaining hormonal birth control without a parent's consent still requires a visit with a medical professional, since there are potentially dangerous complications which can be screened for with a few simple tests.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine whether you will be using a health insurance plan. If the plan's primary member is a parent, the insurance company may send bills and information about the services to the primary member.

  2. Step 2

Contact your doctor or gynecologist. A woman who has become or who is considering becoming sexually active should be examined by a medical professional on a regular basis. Make an appointment for a regular checkup, which will include a pap smear and pelvic exam and may include bloodwork to determine what type of birth control is suitable.

  3. Step 3

If you are not using health insurance, contact your local Planned Parenthood organization and set an appointment with a counselor. The organization will be able to provide access to necessary health care services for sexually active teens as well as advice on various birth control methods.

Tips & Warnings
  • Planned Parenthood works with many insurance providers. They also may be able to offer low cost or free options, depending upon the state.
