How to Build a Small Trellis

A trellis provides adequate support to any heavy or climbing plant and encourages it to grow upwards, thus receiving full exposure from the sun. Trellises range in size from small ones placed in a container to large ones that provide privacy along with support. No matter what the height and measurements of any trellis, it is ultimately a two-dimensional grid with horizontal and vertical poles and a surrounding frame to support any climbing or vining plant. Bamboo canes are often used to make small sized trellises for placing in planters indoors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size and take into account the shape of the area you want to place your small trellis. It may be in a container, planter or along the ground just behind a plant. This will give you an idea of how many sticks and lengths of cord or wire you will need to purchase. A cane ladder works well with bamboos, taking up a little space while providing adequate support.

    • 2

Purchase several bamboo canes with a small diameter so they do not take too much space.

    • 3

Use the measurements you took earlier to cut the bamboo canes to size with a handsaw. Mark the point of cut with a marker and make straight cuts just above the nodes to prevent water from seeping in through the open ends, which could lead to rot and weaken the small trellis.

    • 4

Lay several canes vertically on a flat even surface such as a worktable, working out the spacing between them depending on the size of the area where it will be installed. Use a ruler to make sure they are straight.

    • 5

Place smaller canes horizontally over them to form a grid, or insert several horizontal canes between two vertical lengths so it resembles a ladder to make a cane ladder trellis.

    • 6

Mark the intersecting points with a marker so you know where each piece will go since the canes will shift as you join and secure them.

    • 7

Use wire or cord to connect the pieces firmly together. To do this, take it around each intersecting point, twining the cord around, over and under the two canes to join them together. You can also use gardening tape or all purpose outdoor glue to hold your small trellis firmly in place.

    • 8

Gently pull or tug the small trellis to make sure it is secure before placing it in the container or ground. Reinforce each joint with extra tape or wire if you feel the structure is not secure enough.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also make a small bamboo teepee trellis with three or four bamboo canes cut to the appropriate size and attached several inches below the top with wire. Place it in the container or ground.

  • Use plant wire to attach any plant to the trellis.
