Home theaters with flat panel televisions are becoming increasingly more affordable and popular. Because of this and changes in décor trends, people are passing over, tossing out and replacing entertainment armoires--which became popular in the 1990s--with sleeker, more compact TV stands. Before you haul your outdated, yet still functional, armoire to the dump or donate it to a thrift shop, consider whether you might be able to use it as a practical addition to your kitchen.

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • Drill with variety of bits
  • Shelf clips
  • Wooden shelves
  • Screw hooks or pegboard and pegs
  • Message board
  • Drawer organizers
  1. Step 1

Install a shelf or shelves in the large open space of the armoire, if the armoire did not include one. Measure the size of the shelf and mark the measurements inside the armoire. Drill four holes the size of the shelf clips. Insert the clips and install the shelf or shelves. Place cookware, bakeware, china or other kitchen items on the shelves.

  2. Step 2

Twist screw hooks inside the interior of one of the armoire doors. Hang ladles, slotted spoons, spatulas and other large utensils on the hooks. Another option is to install a sheet of pegboard on the inside of the door and use peg hooks for hanging these items.

  3. Step 3

Measure the interior of the opposite armoire door. Hang a message board, such as a decorative cork board, dry erase board or chalkboard, that is at least slightly smaller than these measurements on the inside of the door. Use it to jot down menus, grocery lists or messages to your family.

  4. Step 4

Pop a drawer organizer specially made to accommodate various sizes of spice jars into the top drawer of the armoire. You can find these at home organization stores, home improvement centers and other home goods retailers. Your spices will be readily available and yet kept out of sight in a cool, dry place.

  5. Step 5

Stash large, infrequently used kitchen items in the remaining drawers of the armoire, such as the roaster you only use during the holidays or a special cake pan used to make your family's birthday cakes. You will free up valuable space in your kitchen without having to sacrifice the items you don't use on a daily basis but still want to keep.
