To create your recipe cards, select a graphics program such as Photoshop or GIMP, a freeware program that performs much like Photoshop. Open a new document by clicking on "File," then "New." Enter the size requirements for your recipe cards by plugging the numbers into the dialog box provided. Next, choose a resolution that best fits the intended use of your recipe cards. For instance, if your cards will only appear on a website and will not be printed, choose 72 pixels for the resolution. However, if you intend to offer your recipe cards as downloadable documents on your website, a resolution of at least 200 pixels is preferable for optimum printing.

Begin creating your recipe cards by selecting the font type you will be using for the text. Choose a font type that isn't too difficult to read. It is important to use the "Layers" panel, located in the lower right-hand corner of your screen, when creating your recipe cards. If you add a graphic to your document, it automatically will be placed on a overstep layer. To bring in photos or other graphics that you have saved to your computer, select "File" and click "Open." Browse the graphics and open the one you want to use. Then select "Edit" and click "Copy." Now go back to your main document and select "Edit" and click "Paste." By using layers you can make changes to elements such as photos, text and graphics without altering any of the work you have done on layers above or below it.

Use the "Custom Shape" tool to enclose the recipes in a box, circle or any other shape of your choosing. You can create a border around it and even add filter effects to that border. To add or modify your text inside the box, click on the "Text" tool, then click in the area of the document where you wish to type. You can create multiple text boxes and reposition them as needed. Once you are satisfied with the final design for your recipe card, add it to your website, forum or blog.
