How to Render Living Room Furniture

If you are a designer who wants to show your client what her living room would look like using a totally different style of furnishings and decorations, you can do it in several ways. One way is to show sample images of similar furnishings to ones you are considering. Or you could sketch the designs on paper. Another good approach is to use textured 3D models which you place in a scene and rendere as a series of images taken from several angles in the living room. Vue Infinite is used, but many other 3D programs could do the same thing.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to Daz3D or Renderosity, and download the furniture and other props you need for the scene. You may have to purchase these items in the Marketplace, but you can find what you need in one of the free areas at these sites. Make sure the items are in a format that will import into Vue Infinite, such as 3DS or Wavefront OBJ. Consult with the documentation that came with your copy of Vue Infinite to know what formats your version accepts. Save the items to a folder titled "Furniture."

    • 2

Load a series of textures you would like to use for the walls and floors of the room. You can also obtain these textures from sites like Renderosity. Save these textures to a folder called "Textures."

    • 3

Open Vue Infinite. Click on the "Primitives" tab, and select the "Cube." Use the "Scale" tab next to the cube to resize it to form a wall. Click on the "Material Editor" in the upper right corner. Select the "Color" tab, and click on the "Load" button to import a texture to apply to the wall. Browse to one of the ones in the "textures" folder that you want to use. Change the "Mapping" to "Object Parametric." Adjust the size parameters to suit the size of the wall. For example, you don't want your fireplace wall to be made up of six giant bricks, so in that case, change the scale so that there are more bricks at a realistic size.

Use the same method used in step 3 to create the other walls, floor, and other structures needed to represent the room. If you plan to show the celling in your renders, you will have to create this too, but you must move the camera into the room to get the renders. Make sure that the parts of the structure are touching so that there are no gaps.

    • 5

Select "File" and click "Import Object." Browse to the "Furniture" folder, and select a piece of furniture you want to add. The piece of furniture appears in the scene. You will probably have to use the "Scaling" function to make the furniture the right size for your room. Bring in all the furniture and other props in this way, placing them where you want them in relation to each other.

    • 6

Click on the "lights" icon on the lower left to add a point light or a spot light, depending on your needs in that area of the room. Move the light where you want it, and adjust the light parameters in the upper right. Place the camera where you want it for the first render. Right-click on the render button at the top and in the dialog set the settings to "Final." Then click "render." Save the resulting render as a high resolution JPEG.
