How to Care for a Vriesea Plant
Vriesea splendens holds its green-red color and leaves year-round, and it is very easy to maintain. Vriesea plants do not require soil, although planting them in soil is fine also. In nature, they generally grow on rocks or tree trunks. Vriesea's roots are porous. It needs soil that retains water, yet has an excellent drainage system. Vrieseas prefer temperature's warmer than 15 degrees C or 60 degrees F. It thrives well in above average levels of humidity, but lower levels are fine too. Does this Spark an idea?

Place a little bit of potting soil into the pot. Place the vriesea plant inside of the pot. Continue to fill with soil, then water. Place the saucer beneath the pot. This allows the water to drain without a mess.

Water the plant only when the soil becomes almost completely dry. Allow the water to completely run through the plant. Drain the saucer once the water has finished running through in order to prevent fungus from growing.

Vriesea needs a few hours of sunlight a day. Indoors, position the plant in direct sunlight in the mornings or in the late afternoons. Alternatively, place the plant outdoors in the middle of the day only under indirect light. Placing the plant in direct bright sunlight burns the foliage.

Fertilize the vriesea with water-soluble fertilizer. Mist the plant leaves with a spray bottle filled with a fertilizer diluted to half strength. You can also place the fertilizer in the middle of the plant, close to the base of the leaves. Fertilize once or twice every 20 to 30 days.

Do not overwater. It will result in the vriesea plant's slowly dying.
