How to Remove Ear Mites at Home

Ear mites are microscopic animals that live in the ear canals of cats and dogs. They feed on dead skin cells in the ears, and can also suck blood from a dog or cat's sensitive inner ear skin. These activities cause itching and pain within an animal's ears. You can remove these pests from your animal's life yourself by following a few easy steps..

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm the presence of mites. Look for dark brown waxy debris in your pet's ears. This substance is caused by ear mites.

    • 2

Gently massage several drops of mineral oil into your pet's ear. If the debris is hard, let the oil sit for a couple of hours and then massage again. This massage will bring the debris to the surface.

    • 3

Use a cotton ball to clean the debris that you've massaged out of your pet's ear.

    • 4

Repeat the cleaning procedure until you can't see any further debris.

    • 5

Put insecticide ear drops in your pet's ears, and massage again. Use cotton balls to clean up any excess. Always follow the directions on the label of the ear drops.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a magnifying glass to see mites within an animal's ears.

  • Dust all your animals with anti-flea powder, as mites can crawl out of ears and into animal fur.

  • Itching mites can cause baldness and irritation around ears.

  • Never use cotton swabs to clean your pet's ears, as you might puncture an ear drum.
