Shoot your pictures in light that's even and not too bright. Be sure your camera is set to take pictures under the conditions you are in. If it's dusk, be sure the camera is on the night setting. It it's an action shot use the camera's action shot feature.

Compose your shot keeping the background in mind. If it distracts from the subject, reposition your shot and leave it out. If it helps tell the story, leave it in.

Upload your pictures to your photo editing software. Choose one to work on and create a duplicate by clicking "file" then "save as," name your copy and work from it. Keep the original intact in case you need to go back.

Crop your picture so you've removed any distracting elements. Keep in mind the subject doesn't have to be dead center. The rule of thirds says that a third of your picture can be the subject. Adjust the contrast and brightness to your liking. If you prefer a black and white image, remove the color saturation.

Fix any imperfections on the subject. You can blend tan lines, remove blemishes or whiten teeth, all with the paintbrush tool. Now that you've cropped, edited and corrected any flaws, you have an image that's ready for the printer.

For best results, print your pictures using the highest resolution. Choose paper that is from the same manufacturer as your printer.
If you don't have photo editing software installed on your computer, there are plenty of editing tools online you can use for free.
