How to Get an Ontario Security License

A security license in Ontario allows you to work as a private investigator, security guard, loss prevention officer, bodyguard or bouncer. Previously, a security license was not required to perform these occupations in Ontario. However, this is no longer the case. The Private Security and Investigative Services Act of 2007 now requires that a security license be obtained in order to work in any of these roles. In fact, some of those who worked in these occupations might now be required to obtain this license to continue working in their respective occupations.

Requirements

1. Ensure that you meet the requirements for a security license in Ontario. You must be at least 18, eligible to work in Canada, have no criminal background and an Ontario mailing address. If you do not meet these requirements, you will not be issued a security license.

2. Obtain an application for a security license from the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Clearly state the type of security license you are applying, private Investigator license, security guard license, or a dual license.

3. Fill out the application for a security license and send it and any other supporting documents mailed to the following address:

Tips & Warnings

• Be sure to indicate on your application form whether you are eligible to work in Canada. Also, don't forget to complete all the information in the police records and background check section, sign and date the declaration and consent to release Information section, and include a passport-sized color photograph.

• Note that you will not receive a refund for any reason whatsoever once you have submitted your application.
