How to Decorate a Kitchen Backsplash

Decorate with Paint

Paint the backsplash with a scrubbable, washable paint. Be sure to choose a paint that can be wiped clean because the backsplash can receive splashes from water and food. Clean the walls with a non-sud cleanser and let dry.

Remove the covers of light switches and outlets.

Mask off the counter and cabinets with blue painter's tape to keep paint off of the surfaces. For a smooth finish, use a roller.

Cover the counters with drop cloths. For a smooth surface use a roller to flatten the drop cloths.

Apply two coats of paint. Let it dry, remove the tape and re-install the plate covers.

Hang artwork as a decorative element to the backsplash.

Look for art that is metal or has a glossy finish. This will allow you to wipe them off.

Lay out the artwork on the counter in a pleasing position to you. The art should be centered between the bottom of the cabinet and the top of the counter.

Use picture-hanging hooks. Mark the location where you want to place the hook with a pencil and, with a hammer, drive the hook into the wall. Hang the artwork.
