Instructions

    • 1

Scrub the rusty pan with steel wool to remove as much rust as possible.

    • 2

Soak the pan for about three hours in a solution of half white vinegar and half water. If needed, the pan can be left to soak overnight in the solution, but no longer than that.

    • 3

Neutralize the action of the vinegar by applying oven cleaner to the pan and putting it inside a plastic bag to sit overnight.

    • 4

Wash and scrub the pan in hot soapy water, dry and set aside. Preheat oven to 125 degrees Fahrenheit and set the pan inside the oven to heat for about 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven with a pot holder or dry dish towel.

    • 5

Apply a thin layer of shortening to the hot pan while being careful not to burn yourself. Return to the oven at 225 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. Remove and slightly wipe down the pan. Return it to the oven for another 30 minutes, remove and wipe the pan to a dull shine.
