How to Relieve Clogged Middle Ear

A clogged middle ear is a result of inflammation in the lining of your ear, and can be caused by allergies, a sinus infection or a cold or flu. Other symptoms associated with a clogged ear include a ringing sensation, temporary hearing loss or pain. Treatment ranges from taking antihistamines or decongestants to getting prescription antibiotics from your physician. You can also treat your clogged ears by using home remedies such as vinegar and warm compresses. Contact your doctor if symptoms persist after three to four days of treatment.

Instructions

    • 1

Use over-the-counter medication. Antihistamines and decongestants reduce inflammation in the ear, which reduces pressure and restores hearing. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine receptor sites that flare up when exposed to allergens. Decongestants constrict blood flow, which allows swollen tissue to shrink, thereby reducing inflammation.

    • 2

Apply a warm compress to your ear. A warm compress can reduce inflammation, which can temporarily relieve ear congestion. Wrap the warm compress in cloth to avoid direct skin contact.

    • 3

Use white vinegar. Three drops of white vinegar in the ear every four hours can absorb fluid that may be trapped in your ear.

    • 4

Contact your doctor. Your physician may prescribe penicillin, amoxicillin or ciprofloxacin to eliminate the sinus infection causing your ear congestion. These antibiotics must be taken as prescribed to kill the infection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Antihistamines and decongestants can cause dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea or constipation.

  • Antibiotics can cause upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes or headaches. Contact your doctor if any of these symptoms occur.
