How to Trim a Croton

Crotons are tropical plants that have become popular as an indoor houseplant because of their brightly colored leaves. They are shrubs that can grow up to ten feet in height outdoors, and have fairly high humidity and light requirements for optimal growth. They tend to grow best in a green house or sun room that is kept fairly humid. Pruning the plant keeps it from getting too leggy looking and allows the lower leaves to branch out with more foliage. Instructions

    • 1

The best time to prune croton is during the spring when the weather is mild and after the last frost.

    • 2

Trim the leaf or branch right above the leaf eye which will encourage new growth.

    • 3

Croton tend to have the heaviest leaf growth toward the top. To force new growth lower on the stem, cut the top growth back heavily.

    • 4

Do not trim back more than 1/3 of the of the foliage as it may stress the plant too much.

    • 5

Wait until the plant has put forth new leaves before pruning again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Crotons are poisonous when ingested and may cause skin irritation. Handle with care when pruning and keep away from children and house pets.
