After you have finished cleaning your greenware, you're ready to have it fired. You don't need to buy a kiln to do ceramics - just know where to find one.

  1. Step 1

Contact the craft shop where you got your greenware if you purchased it already poured and molded. Typically, places charge half the price of the greenware for firing.

  2. Step 2

Check the yellow pages for other ceramic stores if that craft shop is not an option.

  3. Step 3

Inquire at the art department of your local community college or university. Even some high schools have kilns.

  4. Step 4

Get in touch with people who own kilns and are willing to do extra firing. Find them listed under dollmakers or stoneware manufacturers. You'll pay a little bit more going this route.

  5. Step 5

Read the bulletin board at your local hobby store to find people advertising use of their kilns.

  6. Step 6

Pack each piece gently in a shallow cardboard box filled with shredded paper or packing popcorn. Most greenware is damaged while driving home with it or taking it to get fired.

  7. Step 7

Put the boxes on the floor of the car, not the seat. This eliminates the danger of falling.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a good idea to take your greenware receipt with you to the craft shop when you take your pieces in to get fired.
