How to Size a Walking Cane

Walking canes are used by elderly individuals, or those who have suffered a lower body injury, who are having a hard time supporting their entire weight on a leg when walking. Although a cane can give its user his mobility back, to get the full benefit of the cane, it is important that the cane be properly sized to match its owner. Finding the appropriate size, and selecting a cane to match, can be completed simply and quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear your usual walking shoes. Getting the proper high requires wearing the shoes you will most likely be wearing with the cane.

    • 2

Stand upright, with your posture as erect as is comfortable.

    • 3

Allow your hands to hang out your sides. There will likely be a bend in your elbows, and this is OK.

    • 4

Hold the string in your non-dominant hand, and allow it to hang down from the height of your dominant wrist.

    • 5

Adjust where you are holding the string until it just touches the floor.

    • 6

Measure the distance from where you held to the end of the string, then purchase a cane with a handle that has a low point of the same length.
