How to Mount Gate Hinges
Mounting your gate can be the most difficult part of installing your fence. If it isn't done right, the gate will sag or rip itself from hinges that aren't strong enough to support the weight and movement of the gate. Gate hinges vary; be sure to choose the right ones for the job. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the post to determine the length you have to work with. If you have a narrow post, you will not be able to mount a long hinge across it.
-
2
Determine the hinges you need for the gate. Mounting hinges come in various shapes and sizes and work with different types of materials. A heavy wooden gate may require large wrought iron hinges, whereas a vinyl fence only needs small, galvanized steel hinges. Make sure the hinge fits in the area measured on the post in Step 1.

3
Have an assistant hold the gate upright near the post. If your gate and fence are even, the gate should align with the top of the fence. Have your assistant hold the gate (or position it on a block) so that it is upright and in the "open gate position."
-
4
Measure and mark the location of the mounting hinges on the post and the gate.
-
5
Lay the gate on the ground and drill the mounting holes on the post and on the gate.
-
6
Screw the mounting hinges onto the post first, starting at the top and working your way down. Do not tighten completely yet.
-
7
Check the balance of the hinges with the level to make sure the mounts are even. This is important to make sure your gate doesn't sag.
-
8
Reposition the gate next to the post with your assistant holding it in place.
-
9
Screw the mounting hinges to the gate starting at the top and working your way down. Do not tighten completely.
-
10
Look at the gate to make sure it is even and level. Use the level to confirm that everything is straight and balanced.
-
11
Tighten all screws.
-
12
Test the gate.
