The majority of mowers on the market today are flat blade rotary type mowers. These mowers are the most common and easiest to use. Though hard to find, reel type mowers are still available. Most commonly used on golf courses, reel type mowers are actually better for the grass. When properly adjusted, a reel type mower cuts the grass like a pair of scissors. The hardest thing to do with a reel mower is to properly adjust the blade, reel and height.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Work bench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Tape measure
  1. Step 1

Place the mower on top of the work bench. This makes it easiest to make the necessary adjustments.

  2. Step 2

Locate the adjustment screws for the blade. They will commonly be found behind the reel at the top of the frame. Some mowers will have two screws per side.

  3. Step 3

Spin the reel and adjust the screws until the reel spins and touches the blade but does not get stuck.

  4. Step 4

Check the cut. Place a strip of newspaper between the reel and blade, and turn the reel. The newspaper should cut, not tear. If the paper tears, you may need to readjust or sharpen the blade.

  5. Step 5

Check the distance between the blade and tabletop on both ends. If different, adjust the roller height to the correct height on each side.

Tips & Warnings
  • This should be done weekly during the mowing season.
  • The blade and reel should be sharpened according to manufacturer's instructions
  • Keep fingers away from blade and reels, they are sharp.
  • Wear gloves for this procedure.
