How to Alter the Length of a Lined Wool Skirt

Petite women have trouble finding skirts the right length. Most skirts are easy to shorten; however, a lined wool skirt takes a little more thought and work. You must alter the lining and the wool skirt separately so the lining does not hang lower than the outer wool skirt. After your first altering job, you will see how easy it is to shorten lined wool skirts.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the skirt on, or have the skirt's owner put it on, so you can measure the length.

    • 2

Turn the hem of the wool skirt under so it is the desired length. Use one pin to hold the fabric and mark your place.

    • 3

Take the skirt off and lay it on a flat work surface. Measure the spot where you folded the skirt up to make sure you fold up the hem the same distance all the way around the skirt. Use chalk to mark the measurement, if you desire.

    • 4

Trim off any excess fabric from the original hem so your new hem will not be bulky.

    • 5

Tuck under the raw edges of the hem after you trim off the excess fabric. Use pins to hold in place.

    • 6

Thread a needle with thread that matches the skirt fabric. Sew a blind stitch to tack up the hem.

    • 7

Turn the skirt inside out. Place it on a flat work surface.

    • 8

Cut off the excess lining to make it even with the wool skirt.

    • 9

Fold under the raw edges of the lining so it ends up just shorter than the wool skirt. Use pins to hold in place.

    • 10

Hold up the skirt to make sure the wool skirt hangs below the lining fabric.

    • 11

Sew all the way around the lining with a sewing machine. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 12

Turn the skirt right side out again. Shake it a little bit to make sure the lining does not hang below the skirt.

    • 13

Iron the hem of your wool skirt to press the seam flat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trim the threads that connect the lining to the skirt; there are usually a few threads at the side seams. Sew the skirt and the lining together when altering if sewn together originally.
