How to Care for a Pomegranate Plant

Pomegranate plants are actually small fruit-producing trees that can grow to a height of 20 to 30 feet but are generally 12 to 16 feet in height. It produces white or scarlet flowers and fruit follows five to seven months after the blooms.

The fruit is said to provide a wide variety of health benefits and contain high amounts of potassium and vitamin C. Pomegranates can also be juiced rather than eaten to receive the same benefits. Does this Spark an idea?

      Plant the pomegranate tree in an area that has well-drained soil. The soil can be acidic but it is not necessary. The area should be one that receives full sun or only light shade as the trees thrive in light and warmth.

      Water the plant well when it is first planted then watered every two days during the first two weeks of growth. After growth is established watering can be done about every two weeks depending on the soil and weather.

      Fertilize the pomegranate plant once when growth is starting and three times a year after that. The best times to fertilize is early spring, the beginning of summer and the end of summer.

      Prune the pomegranate plant carefully and only before blooming begins. Cut the new growth that is coming up on the trunk. Be sure to remove the growth right at the point that it is coming from the trunk.

      Tap the fruit with your finger and if it makes a metallic sound it is ripe. Pulling the fruit from the tree can damage both the fruit and the tree so it should be cut right at the base of the fruit. The fruit can be stored for several months and will become more flavorful after storing.

  • Only one tree is required since pomegranate trees will self pollinate.

  • Pomegranate trees should be planted using cuttings or established trees as plants grown from seeds may not produce fruit. If using a cutting apply a rooting hormone to the tip before planting.

  • There are many varieties of pomegranate trees. A gardening center or nursery can advise you on what variety will grow best in your area.

  • A pomegranate tree can be grown in a large container but may need to be repotted yearly due to rapid growth.

  • Pomegranate trees should not be planted in an area where it will have other foliage close by. Cramping the tree will decrease the fruit production.
