How to Make Slipcovers for Drink Glasses

Make your own slipcovers for your drink glasses by crocheting beautiful cozies. These slipcovers provide a sponge to catch the precipitation that forms on the outside of your cold drinks. They give you a grip to hold on to when the glass becomes quite slippery and prevents the moisture from dripping off the glasses when you pick them up. These instructions are for a slipcover that will fit a standard size drinking glass. The stitches are basic, and the visual design can easily be changed by changing the yarn color between rows.

Instructions

1. Make a loop with the yarn a few inches from the end and insert the hook in it. Wrap the hook with the continuing end of the yarn. This is called a yarn over. Pull the yarn over through the loop. This is the beginning knot and loop of your project. You will have one loop on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the loop for one chain stitch. Repeat three times for a total of four chain stitches. Insert the hook through the first chain made, yarn over and pull the yarn through the first chain and the last chain to form a ring. This is called a slip stitch.

2. Chain stitch twice. To create a double crochet stitch, yarn over the end of the hook, insert the hook through the ring, yarn over the hook, and pull the yarn back through the ring. You will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops. You will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops to complete the double crochet. Crochet ten more double crochet stitches. You will have 11 double crochet stitches and one chain two stitch. The chain two counts as a double crochet, giving you 12 double crochet stitches in the ring. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain two stitch to connect the round.

3. Chain stitch twice. Double crochet in the bottom of the chain two stitch. Double crochet twice in each previous stitch around the ring for a total of 24 double crochet stitches. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain two stitch.

4. Chain stitch twice. Double crochet in the back loop of each previous stitch. This will shape the slip cover upward on your glass. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain two stitch. You will have a total of 24 double crochet stitches.

5. Chain stitch twice. Double crochet in each previous stitch around the ring. Slip stitch to the beginning of chain two stitch. Repeat around the ring three more times.

6. Chain stitch twice. Double crochet in the bottom of the chain two stitch. Double crochet twice in each previous stitch around the ring for a total of 48 double crochet stitches. Slip stitch to the beginning chain two stitch.

7. Chain stitch once. Slip stitch in the next stitch. Repeat with one chain stitch and slip stitch in each previous stitch around the ring. End with a slip stitch in the beginning chain. Cut the yarn and pull through the last slip stitch made to knot the yarn. Pull the tail of the yarn through the stitches on the inside of the glass cover.
