How to Measure Shower Curtains
A vinyl shower liner will do the trick if all you want is something to keep water confined while taking a shower. A plain liner, however, isn't all that attractive. Many shower curtains are on the market, some costing hundreds of dollars. If you're on a budget, making a shower curtain is a very simple project. When you measure a shower curtain, it helps if you already have shower curtain rings and a liner on hand. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the width for the shower curtain. If you already have a liner and want the curtain the same width, use a measuring tape to find the width of the liner. Otherwise, use a measuring tape to find the length of the tub or the shower curtain rod.
-
2
Adjust the measured width depending on the style you want. For a "full" look, multiply the width from step 1 by 1.5 (or by 2 for an even fuller curtain).

3
Find the vertical length for the shower curtain. Start by measuring from the bottom of a curtain ring on the shower curtain rod to the floor outside the tub. Subtract one inch from the measured distance so the curtain won't drag along the floor when you put it up. For example, if you measure 72 inches, subtract one for a vertical length of 71 inches.

Adjust the vertical length to allow for a top border. Add a half-inch because the curtain will extend slightly above the grommets (holes for the shower curtain rings). To provide adequate strength, you will need to fold and sew in a 1-1/2 inch border at the top. Add 3 inches to allow for the extra material required. For example, you would add 1/2 inch plus 3 inches to the 71 -inch length from step 3 for an overall fabric length of 74½ inches. If you want a wider border, add double the planned border width (4 inches for a 2-inch border, for instance).

Tips & Warnings
A full shower curtain (see Step 2) tends to sag between the rings. To prevent this, sew in extra grommets midway between each grommet intended for the regular set of curtain rings. Add the extra rings (24 in all), and you'll have no problem.
