How to Remove Iron Stains in a Bathtub

Many stains that occur in bathtubs and showers are actually mineral deposits of iron caused by hard water. These minerals build up over time and create a stain on the interior of the tub, usually in the floor area. Although regular cleaning helps to prevent the stains from occurring, occasionally a more rigorous cleaning method is required. With the proper cleaning supplies and a little work, you can restore the tub to its original shine. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the tub thoroughly with a standard cleaning agent and scrubber sponge to remove as much of the iron stain as possible.

    • 2

In a small container combine two parts of baking soda with one part hydrogen peroxide and mix thoroughly to form a thick paste.

    • 3

Dump the solution into the floor of the bathtub, and spread it around using the scrubber sponge. Make sure to concentrate the paste mix onto the areas that are most heavily stained.

    • 4

Allow the paste mixture to sit on the stain for approximately 30 minutes.

    • 5

Scrub away a small section of the stain to see if it comes off easily. If the stain does not come off easily, allow the paste mixture to sit for an additional 15 minutes.

    • 6

Scrub the stain with the scrubber sponge until the stain is removed.

    • 7

Turn on the shower or faucet, and allow the water to rinse the solution down the drain.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can substitute white vinegar in place of the hydrogen peroxide.
