Instructions

Sprinkle salt onto the rust stain. If you are working on stains in more than one area of your quilt, begin by working on a small area and then progress until you have treated all the rust stains.

    • 2

Squeeze lemon juice onto your rag and rub it over the salt that is already on the rust stain. You might want to work the lemon juice in for 2 to 3 minutes.

    • 3

Place your quilt in the sun once all the rust stains have been treated with lemon juice and salt. Never hang your quilt on a clothesline. Instead, spread a flat sheet out on your yard and place the quilt on top of it to dry.

Wash your quilt as you normally would using a mild detergent and cold water. Be sure your washing machine is large enough to easily accommodate your quilt. Stuffing it into a machine that is too small could result in more damage to your heirloom.

Set your quilt out to dry in your yard, placed between two sheets. It is best to wash your quilt early in the morning on a warm day so it has all day to dry.
